Safety

Over the years we have been instrumental in improving safety within the roofing sector and our commitment will not diminish.

This is evident from our head office and fabrication facility to our sites and from senior management to the operatives on the tools; safety is of uppermost importance.

Through working with the BSI we have gained accreditation to OHSAS 18001, the process enables us to develop, implement, monitor and review our processes to a high standard.

We encourage feedback at every level and believe this is crucial to the continuous improvement process. We also hold the belief that consultation with employees is paramount in developing working solutions with enhanced communications being provided by our quarterly newsletter - Rooflines, which is the vehicle for generic company information and Safety Matters, the health and safety specific newsletter.

Safety is continually monitored by our qualified and experienced managers, with audits from our health and safety manager, supported by external consultants from Northern Counties Safety Group as well as the BSI. Our commitment also extends to membership of The British Safety Council.

In addition to OHSAS 18001, this commitment has been recognised by the NFRC who have again awarded us the gold award in their national safety awards. We achieved a 4 star rating in the latest Achilles review and hold accreditation to CHAS (Contractors Health & Safety Assessment Scheme), SAFEcontractor scheme and Construction Line.

Our wish is to achieve an incident and injury free environment

Training

Training is a key part of our commitment with the CSCS, CPCS, NPORS and IPAF schemes being an intrinsic part of operations. It is our requirement that all operatives should carry appropriate training cards. We hold regular construction skills safety awareness courses as a refresher to keep site operatives up to date with current legislation and best practice.

Our site and contracts managers all hold the SMSTS qualification and their commitment is paramount to our success.

Provision of first aid

The need for a First Aid provision is not overlooked. Our site managers and supervisors are on a continuous rolling programme of training to keep them up to date with first aid application and at our head office, we have invested in oxygen resuscitation equipment and an electronic defibrillator with a number of fully trained staff.

Personal Statement

Craig Penketh Steve Champley DipNEBOSH, CMIOSH
Health and Safety Manager, Hathaway Roofing

With experience of auditing and inspecting many Hathaway projects over a near ten year period whilst acting as the Company’s Independent Health & Safety Consultant and now taking on the role of Health & Safety Manager, I am fortunate to have witnessed the company’s strategic Health & Safety vision from a unique position.

Hathaway’s commitment to the safety of their workforce and others is evident in what is an established culture; whilst work is undertaken in an industry where there exists a high hazard profile with safety being of paramount importance.

There is a positive and pro-active approach to safety within the office, factory and construction site environments, from the inception of projects through to completion and the commitment to setting and achieving continuing programmes of improvement is unwavering. This is backed by the proud achievement of over a million man hours worked without a reportable accident.

It is a pleasure to work with such a dedicated and committed team of professionals where safety really is their number one priority.
